Cowboys & Aliens (Universal)
This big-budget summer action blowout was a box-office bust, but it's still kinda fun. How can it not be, with James Bond (Daniel Craig), Indiana Jones (Harrison Ford), and Iron Man's director (Jon Favreau) kicking space-alien ass? It's part old-fashioned western, part sci-fi laser show ... and that's part of the problem. After a tantalizing setup, the movie mixes genres so haphazardly, it ends up making a mess of both. But it's a frequently entertaining mess, even as it comes crashing down on the range. The extended cut doesn't add much, and the best extra is the feature about the story's decade-long path from comic book to screen.
Just in time for David Fincher's remake of part one, the original Swedish movies get boxed up with a documentary about the late author Stieg Larsson. Best of all, the four-disc set includes the longer versions, which run a butt-numbing nine hours in all.
Mr. Popper's Penguins (Twentieth Century Fox)
Jim Carrey plays a real-estate developer who inherits a half-dozen flightless aquatic birds that take over his N.Y.C. apartment in this family comedy, which comes with a high-society party crash, pooping penguins, and some sweet moments. Not as awful as you'd think.
The Simpsons: The Fourteenth Season (Twentieth Century Fox)
The latest collection from TV's longest-running show dips back to the 2002-'03 season for all 22 episodes, including the 300th one featuring Blink-182. Typically, there's a fair mix of hits and misses on these discs, plus deleted scenes, sketch galleries, and commentary.
