The stress of being a deputy working the jail beat is nothing to underestimate. Inmates are all around, sitting in jail cells for good reason, as you you try to keep the peace and maintain a safe environment for them and your fellow deputies.
You are God, in a sense, but powers can be taken too far. No, we are not talking about beating inmates, though that's bad also. In this case down in Summit County, we're talking about forcing inmates to dance.
According to the Akron Beacon Journal, Deputy Dominic Martucci allegedly made five of the inmates under his purview dance on April 11 to regain privileges they had lost earlier in the day, specifically, the right to use the microwave and phone.
Martucci was fired for the actions recounted in an internal report released yesterday, the details of which are amusing and embarrassing. His soundtrack choice for the inmate showdown: the Usher jam "Yeah!" The inmates' choice of moves: ranging from the worm to the robot.
Martucci is accused of ordering five inmates dance to Usher’s Yeah! song and then inviting other deputies to watch during an early evening shift on April 11. The inmates danced their way to regaining use of a microwave that they had lost earlier that day.Another inmate won the right to use the phone and commissary items for his old-school robot dance routine. Martucci blared the music from a smartphone, the report said.
“I did what I had to do so I could use the phone,” the inmate told investigators. A family member had died and he needed to contact relatives, he said.
