Founder of the locally based Refresh Collective, Doc “Dee Jay Doc” Harrill [pictured] will be the Gordon Square Arts District’s musician-in-residence for the second quarter of 2019.

During his residency, Harrill will work with community members of all ages to create Stories of Struggle and Success, a multi-generational, multi-skill level hip-hop project that'll open a community dialogue on issues such as addiction, abuse and bullying.

Detroit Shoreway and Gordon Square residents interested in joining the project and learning more about telling their story through hip-hop as a singer, poet or rapper can apply at refreshcollective.org/stories-of-struggle-and-success. The deadline to apply is April 30.

At 5 p.m. on Friday, May 17, there will be a free performance of the group’s songs during Third Fridays at 78th St. Studios; the concert will take place in the smART space on the first floor.

Dee Jay Doc’s residency will then culminate with an event that takes place at 6 p.m. on Saturday, June 1, at Fresh Lab Cleveland. The free event will feature food, performances of songs written during the program and panel discussions on topics covered in the project.
