Local singer-songwriter Rob Duskey considered signing a record deal earlier this year after he put out a self-released album with his backing band the Rounders. Instead, he's decided to form his own label, Sweet Truth Records. His first release on the newly formed label is a compilation featuring 10 of the city's best singer-songwriters. While all the artists play what could roughly be categorized as alt-country, there's plenty of variety here. Brent Kirby's album opener " Place the Pieces" is a jangly rocker that sounds a bit like Wilco, and the Whiskey Lock's "Lake Erie Shore" really turns up the twang. G. S. Harper and Andrew Zeager go the country route with the stripped-down "August Day," and Rachel Brown's "Just Words" is a pretty pop ballad that shows off her powerful voice. All in all, there's not a bad song on this 10-song compilation. — Jeff Niesel
The artists on the album perform at 8 p.m. Friday, Nov. 23 at Brothers Lounge.
