A 28-year-old Cleveland man is walking across the state to spread awareness against sexual violence and to honor the three Ohio women who were discovered last month after a decade-long captivity.
Alex Sheen, founder of the charity "because I said I would," plans to finish the 240-mile trek in just 10 days (ending today), one day for each of the years that Amanda Berry, Gina DeJesus and Michelle Knight were held against their will by Cleveland kidnapper Ariel Castro.
"I can't imagine the pain and suffering you had to experience in that house," Sheen said to the women in the video where he made his promise. "You have just seen the worst of what man has to offer."
Sheen began his journey in Cincinnati on June 15 and plans to arrive at the Seymour Street residence where the women were held on Wednesday. His own home is a mere six miles away.
“When my knees get tired, I think about why I made this promise,” he told The Columbus Dispatch. “I don’t want to have to read about (sexual abuse) any more.”
Sheen is providing updates on Twitter with the handle @bcisaidiwould. His last check-in was Sunday night in Medina.
When he reaches his destination on Wednesday, he will be greeted by advocates from the Cleveland Rape Crisis Center and will give a brief speech.
