It Will Cost More Than $3 Million To Kill The County's Contract With Former Med Mart Manager MMPI

Another droplet in the sea of questionable developments surrounding the public handling of the Medical Mart and Cleveland Convention Center...

Per a County Council item set for discussion today, the termination of the county's contract with former Med Mart operator MMPI will run at least $3.2 million. The full total is unclear, as there are several blank lines in the resolution text.

The deal also demands that MMPI not get into the Med Mart business anywhere in Ohio or its surrounding states (save for the company's existing merchandize mart in Chicago). And that's likely just peachy for MMPI, which has been walking away from the questionable Med Mart model for years. Aside: After abandoning its mart property in North Point, N.C., MMPI spokesman Dave Johnson said: ""There's absolutely no change in the dedication MMPI has to the success of the Cleveland medical mart and convention center."

A 2011 Scene feature details much of the chaos as the Med Mart plans were being (kinda) finalized.

Anywho, SMG was named as the follow-up manager of the Med Mart and Cleveland Convention Center. The company picked Mark Leahy, general manager of Pittsburgh's David L. Lawrence Convention Center, to operate the venues.
