It’s been nearly a year now since Cleveland Clinic nurse and mother of four Aliza Sherman was brutally murdered outside the Galleria downtown. The high-profile crime netted headlines across the city for weeks. But as we approach the anniversary, the city and Sherman’s family, of course, is no closer to justice than they were last March.
Few developments were publicly announced after the murder. Cleveland Police released grainy video surveillance footage, though the visuals get neither officers nor the public any closer to figuring out what happened on March 24, 2013.
It was a Sunday, and Sherman was meeting with her divorce lawyer in Erieview Plaza. Despite the personal family turmoil, everything, it seemed, was OK in her world. But that day, she was stabbed 11 times. Nothing was taken from her. No trace of who had committed the crime left behind.
Immediately, theories swirled about who could have done this. None are really fit for print here and none come close to providing hard evidence for the police investigation. At the time, police announced an opinion that this was a targeted attack. As of this week, requests for comment from the Division of Police by Scene were not answered.
“Justice for Aliza,” a public rally of support, will be held at 5 p.m. March 24 at East 12th and Hamilton (near the Galleria). The rally will stir awareness for the case and sound a call for self-defense training for women.
