If you're not prone to peruse the softer edges of our local news media, you might have been wondering to no avail why those crazy laser beams were shooting across the city the past few nights. It's all thanks to AHA!, a multi-day festival of lights that now boasts several different "exhibits" of sorts around Cleveland.
The laser beams are the most visible of the projects; they can be viewed up from to 36 miles away through a clear, distinctly non-Clevelandish sky. Dubbed "the Global Rainbow," the seven light beams are shooting out of the top of the Great Lakes Science Center. Creator Yvette Mattern notes that the installation's message has always revolved around unity; that the festival happens to coincide with Gay Games 9 just joyfully compounds its meaning.
Elsewhere, the festival's three other light installations include "Transformation" (an ephemeral projection on the western facade of the Public Auditorium), "The Pool" (a world of concentric circles with which observers and pedestrians can interact on Mall B), and "Drawing Lines" (a project that filters natural light to create new physical spaces at CPL's Eastman Reading Garden).
