1) Forced Perspective (6:30 p.m., 96 min.) Director: Nick Cavalier
Local graphic designer Derek Hess made a name for himself by drawing posters for the hardcore concerts that took place at the old Euclid Tavern in the 90s. He eventually became a well-known graphic designer in the punk/hardcore/metal world and has moved on to other mixed media. This documentary includes interviews with Hess as he talks about his art work and his personal battles with alcoholism and bipolar disorder. Director Nick Cavalier and featured subject Derek Hess were in attendance at yesterday's screening and may be there tonight as well.
2) The Keeping Room (8 p.m. at Cinemark Valley View, 95 mins), Director: Daniel Barber; Starring: Brit Marling, Hailee Steinfeld, Sam Worthington
A few familiar Hollywood faces star in this brutal film about post Civil War life for a trio of women in the American South. Two white women and one slave continue to live as best they can after the males of the family were lost in combat. They drink moonshine and hunt critters for food. They're totally hardcore. And when a couple of ne'er do wells threaten to rape and pillage them, they quote "stop at nothing" to protect themselves. You'll encounter, no doubt, the Hailee Steinfeld of True Grit, not the Hailee Steinfeld of Three Days to Kill.
3) The Dead Lands (11:25 p.m., 108 mins), Director: Toa Fraser
Ready to conclude the penultimate night of the film fest with nonstop gory tribal violence? Boy have we got the picture for you. A teenage Maori boy witnesses a brutal massacre and pledges revenge against an evil warlord. He must track him through the haunted "dead lands" and must find ways other than violence to exact his revenge. The Maoris are the Polynesian peoples of New Zealand, and this violent epic is a shocking, but exhilarating, introduction to their culture and history.
