That Lake Erie Wind Farm is Finally Going to Happen

[image-1]With a cool $40 million from the U.S. Department of Energy, the long-in-the-works LEEDCo wind turbine project is coming to Lake Erie. "Project Icebreaker" will be the first offshore wind farm in the Great Lakes — and one of the first in the country.

The news follows a string of funding developments over the past few years, during which time we all sort of anxiously wondered whether this project would ever get off the ground. Here we are.

This newest federal money will come in over three years, providing the capital needed to build this thing. Six turbines will be located eight to 10 miles out from the shore, all providing "enough electricity for 6,000 homes."

LEEDCo CEO Lorry Wagner even quoted LeBron James at the announcement this morning, saying "Nothing is given, everything is earned!"
