Canopy Joins New 3204 Studios in Tandem Art Openings This Weekend

Before Canopy opened its doors, the space was formerly known as BUCKBUCK Gallery. During its run, local artist Mike Sobek played a major role in the development and execution of exhibitions at BUCKBUCK. Now Sobek is back with the new 3204 Studios, just steps from the highly successful Canopy Collective. This weekend, Canopy presents its third large-scale group exhibition with HYPER REAL, and 3204 Studios debuts BUTTCOFFIN RETURNS, featuring dozens of new works by Brad Pierce.

HYPER REAL is Canopy's third group show, this time with 30 artists that will blow your mind with their take on the theme of hyper realism,” says Canopy owner Erika Durham. “The show will include numerous multi-media pieces, photography, LED clouds, and ‘mini-Canopy,’ among other works. Mike Sobeck will also be displaying his latest sloppy junk food paintings at Canopy.”

This special show includes artwork by more than 30 artists, including: Abbey Blake, Adam Jaenke, Alan Giberson, Ali Phillips, Allyson Humbert, Andrew Gabriel, August Gallik, Beth Kelly, Brandon Davis, Christophe Kochheiser, Daiv Whaley, David Manuelle, Erika Durham, Evan Fusco, Heather Pugh, Jason Look, John Greiner, Jordan Castro, Julie Schabel, Kyle Osbourne, Laura Wimbels, Leah Pare Stern, Marjorie Harris, Mike Sobeck, Nick Bresler, Patrick Jenkins, Phoebe Thomas, Rick Sans, Sam Wandtke, Serjio Andujar, Stephanie Grillishak, Steve MacAdams and Todd Feichtmeier.

The opening reception for HYPER REAL is presented in partnership with BUTTCOFFIN RETURNS at 3204 Studios (3204 Lorain Ave.), showcasing nearly 40 new works by returning Cleveland native Brad Pierce.

“This Saturday, June 18th, Canopy Collective and 3204 Studios will host in-tandem gallery openings,” Durham says. “The two spaces are located on Lorain Ave., about a five minute walk apart, making this the smallest art walk in Cleveland history. 3204 Studio's show, BUTTCOFFIN RETURNS, is a solo show of about 40 new pieces by artist Brad Pierce, aka, Buttcoffin. He describes his work as ‘a bunch of sad, nervous, black and white paintings of wobbly creatures crying and dying.’ Additionally, Buttcoffin and painter Mike Sobeck will be showing a collaboration piece on view for the first time.”

HYPER REAL opens with a reception this Saturday, June 18 from 6 to 10 p.m., while BUTTCOFFIN RETURNS opens from 7 to 11 p.m. Both venues are hosting special promotions for guests.

“The first person who brings a slaw dog from Old Fashioned Hot Dogs to 3204 Studios will get a free Buttcoffin original,” Durham explains. “The first 20 people who come to Canopy with a photo of themselves next to one of Buttcoffin's paintings will get a secret special prize. You should probably go to both shows because these are the two events everyone is going to be talking about all summer. The after party will take place at the B and G Tavern, the Plum and Platform Beer Co., otherwise known as the smallest bar crawl in Cleveland history.”

Canopy Collective is open Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Saturdays and Sundays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and for special events.
