[image-1]With a new $50,000 investment, Cleveland police officers will begin carrying doses of the overdose-reversing drug naloxone (Narcan) with them. The drug has been stocked in about 150 cars so far, according to a Cleveland.com report, with hundreds more to come.
The fact that the Cleveland Division of Police did not carry Narcan has long been a thorn in the side of those working to curb the opiate overdose epidemic. Narcan is a front-line sort of drug, a necessary tool to prevent deaths in a county that saw 666 people fatally overdose on opiates last year alone. (Cleveland fire and EMS personnel have been using Narcan.)
Cincinnati, another Ohio city grappling with the crisis, set up its police officers with Narcan more than two years ago. Dayton police have been armed with Narcan for almost three years.
