Alien Nation

Cleveland Orchestra fends off an E.T. invasion.

Mimes from Mars channel H.G. Wells' War of the Worlds as they take over today's two performances of Orchestra From Planet X. The surprise attack by the Magic Circle Mime Company will come as Cleveland Orchestra Assistant Conductor Tito Muñoz leads his musicians through pieces by Aaron Copland, John Williams, and Scott Joplin. "We had often talked about how much fun it would be to create a Buck Rogers/Flash Gordon-style adventure," says David Middleton, a writer with the Magic Circle Mime Company. "We realized that an alien invasion from Planet X might be a great way of telling the story of the orchestra coming to the New World."The extraterrestrial raid is aimed at keeping kids from falling asleep during a classical-music concert. It helps if space invaders are clad in glow-in-the-dark goggles and neon gloves. "The first thing kids should learn at a concert is that a live performance is a fun, magical experience," says Middleton. "It's a universal language that can bring people together, no matter which planet you're from." Invasions are at 11 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. today at Severance Hall, 11001 Euclid Avenue. Tickets are $10 to $30. Call 216-231-7355 or visit www.clevelandorchestra.com.
