All That Remains

When: Mon., Dec. 17, 7 p.m. 2012
Price: $16 ADV, $19 DOS
In their 14 years of existence, All That Remains have sold more than a million albums worldwide, played shows with other successful metalcore bands like Trivium, Five Finger Death Punch, Asking Alexandria, and The Devil Wears Prada, and they’ve performed at the legendary OzzFest, which is cardinal for metal bands to establish themselves. Their sixth album, A War You Cannot Win, which was released earlier this year, sticks to the same sound All That Remains has been cultivating since its 2004 album This Darkened Heart. Guitar riffs and solos from Oli Herbert are impressive as always, and Phil LaBonte’s vocals are balanced in songs; with powerful, screaming in the verses and strong, clear singing in the choruses. And for those who aren’t so keen on screaming, songs like “Asking Too Much,” “Not Fading,” and “Stand Up” have little-to-no screaming vocals but still maintain the strength of their sound. The album art is a bit cheesy, though; with a skull and two crossed assault rifles emblem in front of a mushroom cloud. And you could say it’s rather unambitious because it doesn’t do anything All That Remains hasn’t done before, but when the result is a solid metalcore album like this, who could complain? All That Remains fans will certainly like it; and it also has the ability to make some new fans out of those who’ve never heard of the band. You know, people who have been living under rocks for the past 10 years. (Sam Mendez)
