Beginning in the 1940s, eccentric filmmaker James Broughton began experimenting with the format. Broughton, whose motto was “follow your weird,” was an outsider’s outsider. His career is profiled in Big Joy: The Adventure of James Broughton, a documentary that celebrates his life and work. “I believe in ecstasy for everyone,” he says at one point in the movie. It screens at 8:30 tonight at the Cleveland Institute of Art Cinematheque. Tickets are $9. (Jeff Niesel)
