Anti-Flag

The cardinal sin in punk rock is, of course, selling out to the man -- or even being perceived to have sold out. So no surpise that ultra-leftist punk outfit Anti-Flag found itself faced with a dilemma last year when -- after more than a decade as an underground, anti-establishment hero -- it signed with RCA, drawing the ire of its large, dedicated fan base. "We will continue to stand against the mindlessness and dangers of patriotism, nationalism, militarism, fascism, and morally bankrupt neoconservatives," the Pittsburgh-bred bandmates said at the time.

They remain true to that pledge on the just-released For Blood and Empire. Over its usual SoCal-style pop-hardcore backing, Anti-Flag pens songs that nearly all condemn George W. Bush and/or the Iraq war, among them "The Press Corpse," "The W.T.O. Kills Farmers," and the angry, shout-along hit of the spring, "Depleted Uranium Is a War Crime." I guess we know where they stand -- wolves in corporate-sheep's clothing, revolt!
