Around Hear: So Trendy

And More Local Music news

Aaron Brooks is no longer a Trendy punk. Simeon Soul Charger, his mature new rock band, will release its self-titled debut EP on Saturday, April 25 ,at Musica (51 E. Market St.). If you're looking for the infectious, wise-ass pop-punk he played as frontman of Trendy, you'll be disappointed or impressed.

"To make a long story short, I grew up, my taste changed, my goals changed and now I'm here," says Brooks. "I'm over the lowbrow now."

Trendy's 2006 Stupid Generation might be Cleveland's best pop-punk album. The group signed a management deal with a California company, but things went south, the band grew tired of songs about sloppy sex and tampons, and the players split in late 2007.

On the new EP, which will be available as a free download at myspace.com/simeonsoulcharger on April 26, Brooks emerges as a gifted songwriter who can really sing. The band plans to use a full choir for the 8 p.m., all-ages show. Admission: $8.

Decadent Design mainman David Kay will give away 21 pieces of pop art at a show titled Love Is a Gun at the Symposium (11794 Detroit Ave., Lakewood) at 9 p.m. Saturday, April 25. Atmospheric rock band Dead Letter Room, which Kay fronts, headlines; psych-goth group Flowers in Flames and guitar-cello duo Nihla open. Admission $3 21 and over, $5 18-20.

Below Jupiter will release its second album, Step Into Home (Act II), on Thursday, April 23, at the Beachland Tavern (15711 Waterloo Rd.). "Two songs are uptempo piano rock," says singer-keyboardist Josh Emmet. "Four songs have an Americana folk feel. And four songs have a strong [classical] music influence." Showtime is 9 p.m. Tickets: $5.

Matthew Sweet and Bangles singer Susanna Hoffs will cover "Go All the Way," the 1972 hit by Cleveland's Raspberries, on Under the Covers Vol. 2, due July 21 on Shout! Factory. The duo also covers signature songs by Todd Rundgren, Carly Simon, Rod Stewart and Mott the Hoople, on the album.

Cleveland Mott the Hoople fans have a chance to see the band's reunion concert on October 5, which will feature all five original members. The Beachland is teaming with local travel agent Mike Benz for an eight-day trip to London and Liverpool. Call 216.692.1000 for details. Frontman Ian Hunter, who penned "Cleveland Rocks," provided a block of good seats.dferris@clevescene.com
