At today’s Waterloo Arts Festival, the Collinwood neighborhood shows off its vibrant arts community -- which includes everyone from painters to poets. “The event is totally grassroots,” says director Sarah Gyorki. Dancers, performance artists, and live bands entertain on a stage in the middle of the action, while local merchants set up shop, selling ceramics, jewelry, and food.

The fifth-annual fest features tons of art exhibits too. But it looks a little different from most local street fairs that take over city blocks in the summer, says Gyorki. “We don’t have beer gardens, gambling, or typical fair food,” she says. Instead, the celebration includes a bike rodeo, a bubble installation, and plenty of things to keep you busy all day long -- like storytelling and hands-on activities with chalk and paint. Also be sure to check out the Beachland Ballroom’s popular Rock & Roll Flea Market. And ask around about the many after-parties happening once the fest shuts down. “The festival is basically a microcosm of everything that Collinwood is about,” says Gyorki, “packaged in a one-day eight-hour slot.”
