At the Arthouse

Movie offerings from the Cinematheque and Museum of Art this week

Duck SoupThe Marx Brothers' best movie — and one of the funniest movies ever made — screens as part of the Cinematheque's "Best of the Marx Bros." series. The story has something to do with two small countries declaring war on each other, but the gags come so fast and furious, you'll hardly notice there's a plot there. Seriously, you don't want to miss this one. Cleveland Institute of Art Cinematheque. At 7:25 p.m. Friday, August 6, and 5:30 p.m. Saturday, August 7. — Michael Gallucci

Coco Chanel & Igor Stravinsky

The lives of fashion designer and composer mix and mingle in this true story about their time together in Paris. Who knew haute couture and classical music had so much in common? Opens Friday at the Cedar Lee Theatre.

Countdown to Zero

New interviews with eggheads mingle with archival footage of world leaders in this documentary about the nuclear-arms race. Ten, nine, eight, seven ...

Opens Friday at the Cedar Lee Theatre.

The Law

This 1959 Jules Dassin movie is also known as Where the Hot Wind Blows, which, frankly, is a better title for this little-seen gem about a smokin'-hot housekeeper (Gina Lollobrigida), a duped gangster (Yves Montand), and some poor dude (Marcello Matroianni). Cleveland Institute of Art Cinematheque. At 8:55 p.m. Friday, August 6, and 7 p.m. Saturday, August 7.

Lars von Trier's 1988 take on the old-school revenge story. Knowing von Trier, there's probably blood. And maybe a severed penis or two. Cleveland Museum of Art Morley Lecture Hall. At 7 p.m. Wednesday, August 4.

Mesrine: Killer Instinct

First part of a new biopic about '70s-era gangster Jacques Mesrine, who limbed the ranks to Public Enemy No. 1 in France and Canada. He aimed big. Cleveland Institute of Art Cinematheque. At 6:30 p.m. Sunday, August 8.

Mesrine: Public Enemy No. 1

Part two of the biopic pits gangster Jacques Mesrine (feared in Canada, we're guessing, since he was Public Enemy No. 1 and all) against a determined cop, who's hot on his trail. Cleveland Institute of Art Cinematheque. At 8:45 p.m. Sunday, August 8.

Picasso and Braque Go to the Movies

... and they won't shut up! Trust me, you don't want to sit behind them. Actually, it's a documentary about how the two artists were influenced by film. Cleveland Museum of Art Morley Lecture Hall. At 6:30 and 7:45 p.m. Friday, August 6.

Road Movie

A young man drives a truck filled with movies and projectors across the Indian desert. It's been called a "new Cinema Paradiso." Great. Does that mean we're gonna bawl our eyes out at the end? Cleveland Institute of Art Cinematheque. At 5:30 p.m. Friday, August 6, and 9:25 p.m. Saturday, August 7.
