At the Arthouse

Breathless leads this week's arthouse picks

This 1960 classic from Jean-Luc Godard modernized movies in a mere 90 minutes. Pretentious, revolutionary, and downright riveting, it tells the story of a young thug on the run. But the heart of the movie lies in Godard's stylistic filmmaking. Breathless celebrates its 50th anniversary with a restored print. Seriously — see this one on the big screen. Cleveland Institute of Art Cinematheque. At 7:30 p.m. Friday, September 10; 5:15 p.m. Saturday, September 11; and 9:15 p.m. Sunday, September 12.Agora

Rachel Weisz stars in this new Spanish epic about a fourth-century astronomer living in Egypt dealing with fundamental Christians. Think director Alejandro Amenábar draws any comparisons to modern society here? Cleveland Institute of Art Cinematheque. At 7:05 p.m. Saturday, September 11, and 3:15 p.m. Sunday, September 12.

Animal Kingdom

Memento's Guy Pearce plays a detective trying to set straight a young boy destined for a life of crime in this new Australian noir. Opens Friday at the Cedar Lee Theatre. See review in Movie Capsules.

The Concert

A brilliant conductor, now working as a janitor after being fired years ago for hiring Jews, reunites with his old orchestra for a performance. Their opening number: "Fuck You, Ant-Semitic Assholes." Opens Friday at the Cedar Lee Theatre.

This isn't a big-screen version of the TV show about a limping, pill-popping doctor. Nope — it's a 1977 Japanese horror comedy about a group of schoolgirls stranded in a creepy old home that's probably possessed by the ghost of a limping, pill-popping doctor. Cleveland Institute of Art Cinematheque. At 9:20 p.m. Friday, September 10, and 9:35 p.m. Saturday, September 11.

Princess Kaiulani

A Hawaiian princess says "no way" when the United States tries to take over her nation's monarchy in the 19th century. Cleveland Museum of Art Morley Lecture Hall. At 7 p.m. Friday, September 10, and 1:30 p.m. Sunday, September 12.

Two in the Wave

Documentary about the relationship between French New Wave directors Francois Truffaut and Jean-Luc Godard. Confidentially yours, it'll leave you breathless. Cleveland Museum of Art Morley Lecture Hall. At 7 p.m. Wednesday, September 8.
