At the Arthouse

A bounty of fine films for your enjoyment this week

The Tillman Story

When Pat Tillman walked away from a multimillion-dollar football gig to fight in Afghanistan, fans were shocked. But what's really shocking is the government's role in covering up his death after he was killed by friendly fire in 2004. This absorbing movie traces the scheming behind the official version of his tragic death. The film is up for this year's Best Documentary Academy Award. See it now so you can brag at your Oscar party that you actually saw one of the nominated documentaries. At the Cinematheque at 7:05 p.m. Saturday, January 8, and 8:20 p.m. Sunday, January 9.

Every Man for Himself

Director Jean-Luc Godard's return to mainstream movies (from 1980) is about a filmmaker, his ex-girlfriend, and a hooker. Seeing that the main character's name is Godard, we're gonna go out on a limb and say it may be a tad autobiographical. Cinematheque. At 5:15 p.m. Saturday, January 8, and 6:30 p.m. Sunday, January 9.

127 Hours was James Franco's breakthrough role in 2010, but he's nearly as good in this biopic about beat poet Allen Ginsberg. Bonus: he gets to keep both arms. Cinematheque. At 6:45 p.m. Thursday, January 6, and 9:30 p.m. Friday, January 7.

Kings of Pastry

The latest by documentary director D.A. Pennebaker (who made Bob Dylan's Don't Look Back and the Monterey Pop concert film) deals with the yummy world of pastry-chef competitions. Cleveland Museum of Art's Morley Lecture Hall. At 7 p.m. Wednesday, January 5.

Making Plans for Lena

A recently separated mom begins a mental breakdown that leads to her family's home, where unwanted advice and an old beau await. Cinematheque. At 9 p.m. Saturday, January 8, and 4 p.m. Sunday, January 9.

The Milk of Sorrow

A 2010 Oscar nominee (for Best Foreign Language Film) about the Peruvian Civil War and its harrowing effect on women. Cleveland Museum of Art's Morley Lecture Hall. At 7 p.m. Friday, January 7, and 1:30 p.m. Sunday, January 9.

Samson and Delilah

This new Australian movie has nothing to do with the dude with the awesome hair. Instead, it's a road story about two teens who escape to the big city. Cinematheque. At 8:30 p.m. Thursday, January 6, and 7:30 p.m. Friday, January 7.
