When the multiplex is still showing junk

Funny Face

The Cinematheque series “Audrey Hepburn: Sophisticated Lady” continues this week with Stanley Donen’s 1957 musical. If it’s not a great movie, it is a great-looking one. Hepburn plays a nerd who catches the eye of photographer Fred Astaire, who promptly turns her into a famous model. The sets, costumes, and songs are all splendid, as is Donen’s direction, which brings to life scenes straight out of fashion magazines. Film geeks, take note: The Cinematheque is showing a three-strip Technicolor print borrowed from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. So this is prime stuff. At 5:15 p.m. Saturday, January 29. — Michael Gallucci

The Anchorage

Four Lions

Too soon? Apparently not for the filmmakers behind this British satire about suicide bombers who aren't very good at their jobs. Thankfully. Cinematheque. At 9:55 p.m. Saturday, January 29, and 6:30 p.m. Sunday, January 30.

Mao's Last Dancer

Nine Nation Animation

This program gathers nine recent award-winning animated films from Norway, Turkey, and other countries we don't get too that often. Cleveland Museum of Art's Morley Lecture Hall. At 7 p.m. Friday, January 28, and 1:30 p.m. Sunday, January 30.

Sex & Justice

This 1993 doc takes a look at Clarence Thomas' controversial 1991 Senate confirmation hearings. Expect pubic hair. Cleveland Museum of Art's Morley Lecture Hall. At 7 p.m. Wednesday, January 26.
