David Bowie leads the flick picks for the week

The Man Who Fell to Earth

David Bowie is perfectly cast in Nicolas Roeg's 1976 sci-fi parable about an alien who comes to our planet to get water for his own dying world. To raise the funds he needs to return home, Ziggy starts a tech company. Greedy businessmen have plans of their own. The movie is definitely a product of its time and hasn't aged as well as other sci-fi parables from the era. Still, Bowie plays the glass-eyed alien with stoic remoteness, which we attribute to the mountains of coke he was doing at the time. The Cinematheque is showing the uncut version of the movie in a new print. You really should see this one on the big screen. At 9:15 p.m. Friday, July 29, and 7 p.m. Saturday, July 30. — Michael Gallucci
