Awesome Color

With the New Lou Reeds and National Suicide Day. Tuesday, June 5, at the Beachland.

This Michigan-to-Brooklyn trio seems more like a sound statement than an actual band. Picked up by Thurston Moore's Ecstatic Peace label, Awesome Color often sports vivid splashes of pink, yellow, and orange while spitting out recycled stoner/garage rock. But here's the trouble: The band's self-titled disc, released last year, sounds more like a well-written term paper on the Stooges and early Spacemen 3 than a band with a personality all its own. Conceptually, it's interesting, but if you already own Fun House or Sound of Confusion . . .

The live show, however, is a different scene. Moore wouldn't have put out Awesome Color's disc if he hadn't seen a performance first. The band possesses the potential to transform its sound into something ear-crunching, visceral, and hectic. Since last year, there's been plenty of time for adjustments and additions to the group's bag of tricks -- and touring with Dinosaur Jr. has probably made Awesome Color even tighter.
