Band of the Week

Extra Medium Pony

Meet the Band: Rick Spitalsky (guitars and vocals), Ben Gmetro (bass), and Jimmy Frysinger (drums).

About a Girl: Like many artists before them, Extra Medium Pony's pop-rock tunes are inspired by heartbreak. "One stormy night in November a girl broke my heart, and I was compelled to write 18 confusing breakup songs," says Spitalsky. But the band's music isn't about wallowing in self-pity. "They're not sappy why-me songs," says Spitalsky. "In fact, they're made to keep you from feeling alone and helping you feel more spiteful."

Community Service: The trio has ties to the Davenport Collective, a community of artists, musicians, and poets from Cleveland. "When you find yourself surrounded by really interesting people, it's all the reason to continue to make music," says Spitalsky.

Amateur Hour: Spitalsky says the band's concerts — or the Pony Show, as he jokingly refers to them — are loaded with a crazy amount of songs in a short period of time, many technical difficulties, and the occasional missing set list.

Why You Should Hear Them: The slacker-pop songs on Extra Medium Pony's latest album, Heartworm, will transport you back to a time when '90s alt-rock was all over the radio.
