Band of the Week

15 60 75 The Numbers Band

Meet the Band: Robert Kidney (guitar, vocals), Jack Kidney (keyboards, harmonica, vocals), Terry Hynde (saxophone), Bill Watson (bass), Clint Alguire (drums)

Longevity: The Numbers Band has been together for more than 40 years, something that bandleader Bob Kidney attributes to the fact that the guys in the Kent-based band simply like what they do. "The musicians enjoy playing the music with me," he says of the band that's had various line-ups over that time. "The ones that hang are the ones interested in doing something unusual. We're constantly working on new material." Kidney also says the band regularly re-learns songs from its past and brings them back into the set lists.

On the Local Scene: The band regularly gets plenty of support from local music fans in both Cleveland and Akron/Kent. "Why they support us is because of the music," Kidney says. "There are lots of bands that play great music and no one comes to see them. That's why we're still in business. I thank them at every performance. We get standing room only at some of the clubs. Our music is truly unique. It's not trendy. We've always been on the outskirts. The people love us. They want to be challenged and that's what this music does."

Why You Should Hear Them: The band is celebrating the long-time-in-coming release of Coal Tattoo, which was originally recorded in 1998 when the band was in Europe to perform at a festival curated by Pere Ubu's David Thomas. "Due to funding, it wasn't able to come out until now," says Kidney. "It's complicated. They shopped it and there was no interest. I warned them that there wasn't enough blues on it. It's an interesting CD. It was out in April on a label out of England. It got a nice review in the Huffington Post."
