After a long string of biennial releases, Baltimore’s Beach House took an extra year off after 2012’s Bloom. The result was a huge surprise for fans: two albums released just two months apart in late 2015. The band didn’t throw any curve balls with the content of Depression Cherry and Thank Your Lucky Stars, however, and stuck with the tried and true formula that has supported it since its debut. Beach House plays electropop in a deep freeze: heavy drum machine beats blanketed by melodic synths and chamber choir vocals, all bathed in the same oversaturation as the Magnetic Fields’ music. Highlights include “Sparks” from Depression Cherry and “Majorette” from Thank Your Lucky Stars, both of which feature rare bits of fuzz guitar. Live, it’s a performance by shadows as band members Alex Scally and Victoria Legrand hide in front of colorful backlighting. The music lends itself well to the immersive, communal concert experience.
