Wednesday, August 6, at Wilbert's.

Featured on movie soundtracks, TV commercials, and at countless concert and club dates, the Louisiana six-piece BeauSoleil is the greatest single reason for Cajun music's popularity explosion.

Cultural considerations aside (for a moment), the success of BeauSoleil, now in its 25th year, is due in no small measure to the band's sheer musical prowess, regardless of dialect. The front line of fiddle master Michael Doucet, his brother David on guitar, and accordionist Jimmy Breaux provides a banquet of hot, tasty, solo choruses that speak to real music fans of many persuasions. They're also an outfit as eclectic as they are tradition-bound. Threads of blues, Western swing, rock, and New Orleans R&B can be found in this Cajun weave.

BeauSoleil's catalog is large, and two anthologies provide great intros. The recent Encore, Encore is a cross section of the band's 1990s output; 2001's Best of the Crawfish Years chronicles its seminal '80s work.
