Beethoven's Fateful Fifth

When: Fri., Nov. 25 2016
You might not think of Beethoven as a YouTube sensation, but a recent search for his 5th Symphony revealed one video that had been played a whopping 39 million times. The piece remains one of classical music’s most iconic compositions. Tonight at 8 at Severance Hall, the Cleveland Orchestra performs the piece. Jaap van Zweden conducts. Pianist Daniil Trifonov, a graduate of the Cleveland Institute of Music who won first prize at the International Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow in 2011, will be soloist in Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 23. An hour before the concert, guest speaker David J. Rothenberg, chair of the department of music at Case Western Reserve University, gives a pre-concert talk, “The Legacy of Beethoven’s Fifth.” Performances repeat at 8 p.m. tomorrow and at 3 p.m. on Sunday. Tickets start at $49. (Niesel)
