Best Cleveland Success Story

Independent Filmmakers

What were the odds that this year's Sundance Film Festival would include two movies by female filmmakers who grew up in Shaker Heights? Jamie Babbit's But I'm a Cheerleader, a bright satire of groups that claim to "rehabilitate" young gays, and Jenniphr Goodman's The Tao of Steve, the sharp-witted story of an overweight, unemployed ladies' man, both won national distribution this year (and were shown at the Cedar Lee at the same time). Add to that the huge critical success of Magnolia, the epic movie from Paul Thomas Anderson -- who didn't grow up here, but is the son of Ernie Anderson, the famous Ghoulardi -- and it's been a great year for young filmmakers with Cleveland connections.
