Best Custard With a Past

Weber's Premium Custard and Ice Cream

Clevelanders love to live in the past. Get a group of us together, and it's only a matter of time before someone starts conjuring up images of the Sterling-Lindner Christmas tree, the Flying Turns at Euclid Beach, or the old railroad tunnels crisscrossing the bowels of the Terminal Tower. But while most of these phenomena now exist only in our imaginations, Weber's Frosted Malted Custard dwells happily in the here and now. The cool, delicate treat was made famous in the basement of Higbee's on Public Square, between the 1930s and the 1970s, and was the undisputed highlight of a trip downtown for many a baby boomer. Its rich, understated chocolate malt flavor hasn't changed much over the years -- thank goodness -- although its consistency is a little firmer than you might remember, making it more suitable for a cone than for the small, slender glasses of our youth. Current Weber's owner David Ford whips up the goods in vintage machines, using the original recipe, and to this day, staffers can barely keep up with demand. It's not too often you find a way to revisit your childhood. But at Weber's, sweet memories come to life.
