Jerold Optical

Jerold Rabnick opened his eyeglass store in 1946, when he was a newly minted optician in his early 20s. He passed the trade on to his children, optician Lisa Rubin and glass-cutter Loren Rabnick. Though Jerold is semiretired, he still works twice a week. Five years ago, rising Gateway rents forced the store to move -- across the street from its original location. The old shop was famous for its front window, where passersby could watch the glass-cutter at work. He no longer sits in the window, but kids can still watch him, thanks to a viewing hole specially cut into the wall of his lab at the new location. The store serves families and fixed-income elderly, as well as a newer, more yuppified clientele.
