Every metropolis needs its own Chita Rivera: an always dependable musical performer who can play any brassy, sassy dame. She must be tough, funny, and tarty to enchant the gay boys while at the same time sexy, ironic, and vulnerable to keep everyone else enthralled. A happy fate requisitioned Sandra Emerick to fit the bill. In Chicago, she perfected the homicidal floozie. She also managed to make Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice's all-singing/all-dancing Eva Perón the most exhilarating she-monster since Joan Crawford picked up her first wire hanger.
