Best Grassroots AIDS Activist 

Ray Allmond

Since his HIV diagnosis in 2000, Lakewood's Ray Allmond has vigorously campaigned as an advocate for African Americans with AIDS. When he's not working as a corporate-events manager at Cleveland Browns Stadium, the 50-year-old Allmond acts as a staunch watchdog in several AIDS activist groups, including the Ohio AIDS Coalition, the Ryan White Planning Council, and the AIDS Taskforce of Greater Cleveland's "Voices Against the Silence." This spring, Allmond gathered $14,000 in private donations to spearhead the inaugural Black HIV Awareness Expo at Karamu House. "The same thing that happened in sub-Saharan Africa can happen here in Cleveland," he warns.
