Best Local Cheese-Maker

Middlefield Cheese

Located in the country's fourth-largest Amish community, the Middlefield Cheese House has been doling out award-winning cheeses for several generations. It's most famous for its Swiss, a creation that requires nearly six quarts of fresh milk per pound of cheese. This charming chalet, located about 35 miles east of Cleveland, houses a food store and a most unusual one-room museum. But the cheese is what butters this family's bread -- sweet, mild, or milky; bitter, nutty, or smoky; they're worth the drive, and worth getting stuck behind a buggy on the way.
