Nothing lifts a neighborhood like a great bakery, and thanks to Tom and Adria Clark, residents living near the Lakewood-Rocky River border have received the biggest lift of all. Originally from Lakewood, Tom spent the last decade working in Portland, Oregon's bakery biz. He returned home and perfected his craft at the wonderful On the Rise. Seven months were spent remodeling a shabby building into a sleek metropolitan bakery. The open design gives customers unfettered views of the kitchen, including its flour-dusted worktables and massive ovens. Everything is made from scratch daily and displayed on baker's racks. Bread fans will go nuts for Blackbird's European-style baguettes, focaccia and ciabatta.
