Kiteboarding on Lake Erie

Imagine cutting through the waves on a wakeboard, flying gracefully through a curtain of surf. In the rapidly exploding sport of kiteboarding, all you need is the wind. If you've ever driven past Edgewater Park on a breezy day, you've probably seen them -- those massive, horseshoe-shaped kites bobbing in the air. Twenty-four-year-old Joel Hageman of Lakewood has been kiting for five years. "There's a ton of power in the kite," says Hageman, who can easily soar 20 feet above the water if the wind's blowing hard. "It's about just gettin' air and havin' fun." But the kicks don't come cheap. A starter kit and lessons will put you back $2,000.
