Big Thief/Dear Nora

When: Wed., Sept. 20, 8 p.m. 2017
Price: $12 ADV, $14 DOS
We’ve been hooked on Big Thief’s first album, Masterpiece, since it came out. Adrianne Lenker’s voice was an undeniable revelation, especially when placed against the wide-open freeway chords on the title track. On Capacity, the band’s second album, the band explores the dualities and complexities of life. Any worries of a sophomore slump are put to rest within the first tune, which breaks open the fragilities of young love. Elsewhere, on “Great White Shark” (the second song on the album with “shark” in the title), Lenker sings, “For in the dark there is release,” while the band swims gently through an underwater melody. It’s a good album, even though it may be a little too emotional and haunting at times. (Eric Sandy)
