Bites: Jonathan Bennett Cooking for James Beard House

Dining at the James Beard House in New York is a real treat. But cooking there — now that's an honor. That's precisely what chef Jonathan Bennett of Moxie will be doing on November 6 when he presents a "Fall in Ohio" dinner at the famed venue.

"To stand behind the stove at the Beard House is a humbling experience," Bennett says. "And to be part of such a great organization is truly an honor. But New York City is a long way from Cleveland. It's only right that I share this experience with [my customers]."

So for those of us who can't make the trip, Bennett is hosting a "Beard in Beachwood" dinner at Moxie (3355 Richmond Rd., Beachwood, 216-831-5599, moxietherestaurant.com) on October 13. It starts with passed appetizers, followed by a multi-course fall-themed dinner with wine. Items include steamed buns filled with maple-braised pork belly, thyme-basted rainbow trout, and lamb loin in demi. Cost is $130 per person, plus tax and tip. Reservations are required.

When Chris McKim and his wife launched the Brew Kettle (8377 Pearl Rd., Strongsville, 440-239-8788, the brewkettle.com) 15 years ago, they never imagined how the business would grow — and evolve. In addition to opening the restaurant way back then, McKim simultaneously launched Ohio's first brew-on-premises facility. Soon he added his own line of beers. Later came the make-your-own-wine department.

These days, the restaurant is going gangbusters, the brew-on-premises is on wait-list, the winery is taking off, and the brewery is cranking out 95,000 gallons a year. Not only can you find the tasty brews on-site, but also areawide at bars, restaurants, and on the shelves of local grocery stores. "Our sales are up 700 percent this year," says McKim. The operation recently expanded to 18,000 square feet — not bad for a strip-mall operation.

To celebrate their fifth anniversary, Prosperity Social Club (1109 Starkweather Ave., 216-937-1938, prosperitysocialclub.com) is offering $5 off every entrée on Wednesdays throughout October. What's the catch? According to owner Bonnie Flinner, you've got to wish a staffer "Happy Anniversary!" Dispense with the pleasantries and you're ready to hit the deeply discounted Hungarian-style stuffed cabbage, shepherd's pie, barbecued ribs, and fish fries.
