Bites: Last Chance at Cleveland Restaurant Week

And more local dining news

It's not too late to take advantage of Downtown Cleveland Restaurant Week, when some 45 independent shops are offering $30 three-course meals. It runs through Saturday, February 27. Been wanting to try Verve, Crop Bistro or the Chocolate Bar? Now's your chance. Check out the complete list of participating restos at, where you can also print out a $2 parking voucher for use at downtown lots.

Hats off to Jonathan Bennett, chef and partner of Moxie and Red (3355 Richmond Rd., 216.831.5599,, for snagging the 2010 International Foodservice Manufacturers Association Silver Plate award for independent restaurants. Bennett will receive his honor at this year's National Restaurant Association show, held in Chicago in May.

Wasabi Japanese Steakhouse, with locations in Akron and Canton, will soon have a local outpost. Scheduled to open in Beachwood (3725 Orange Pl., 216.292.8866, on March 1, the popular sushi and teppanyaki restaurant took over the space formerly occupied by the Olive Garden. "We've removed all traces of the Olive Garden," promises GM Aron Lin. Like its southern kin, the large restaurant will feature two main rooms: one devoted to a bar, sushi bar, and traditional table service; the other outfitted with 20 teppanyaki grills. Two tatami rooms will accommodate (shoeless) parties of eight at sunken tables concealed behind shoji screens. "We're similar to Benihana, but we are more hip, more lounge-y and more fun," says Lin. The menu features sushi, creative Asian dishes and traditional Japanese steakhouse fare.

Folks looking to squeeze nine holes of golf into their lunch hour will soon have the chance. Slated to open before the end of February, Caddyshack Lounge and Pro Shop is an entertainment venue outfitted with six top-of-the-line high-def golf simulators. These pricey units are no mere video game, explains GM Chris Gresham. "The technology is the best way to analyze your swing," he says. Caddyshack is located at the Prospect Avenue entrance to 668 Euclid, the new mixed-use complex that will also feature Zinc Bistro. The roomy 8,500-square-foot sports bar will also offer Nintendo Wii systems for casual fun, a fully stocked pro shop selling clubs, bags and apparel, and a hopping bar scene. Plans are to serve lunch and dinner, with soups, salads, sandwiches, pizzas and hot dogs on the bill.
