Hate them for their overuse of eyeliner and hair spray, but that only seems to fuel the fire that is Black Veil Brides. Whether they’re labeled emo, hardcore or glam, each description applies to a degree, since the fivesome has managed to change its sound and line-up for all three of its studio albums. The most recent release, Wretched and Divine: The Story of the Wild Ones, out early this month, is the group’s straightest approach to rock and their first concept album, focused around a short story written by singer Andy Biersack. Although the vocals and guitars show clear maturation from older albums, the songs sound flat and repetitive for a band influenced by Motley Crue and Kiss. Perhaps the hour-long album-based movie the band has in the works will solidify the band’s new style, and maybe, just maybe, they’ll reserve the makeup for stage performances only. (Nikki Hunt)
