Blackpool Lights

With Working Title and Rookie of the Year. Sunday, July 9, at the Grog Shop.

Hailing from Kansas City, Missouri, Blackpool Lights formed out of the ashes of the Get Up Kids' 2005 breakup. The group members channel an earnest, rollicking sound that's not all that different from guitarist Jim Suptic's previous band; but Suptic isn't quick to ride on his bandmates' coattails either. Suptic, Thom Hoskins (guitar-vocals), Billy Brimblecom (drums), and Brian Everard (bass) deliver an honest performance on their debut album, This Town's Disaster, offering emo enthusiasts and indie-rock purists something hearty to ponder.

Brimblecom, who used to bang the drums with the L.A. dance outfit the START, had to face some hard facts in early 2005, when he was struck with Ewing's sarcoma, a type of bone cancer. Although the diagnosis came during the recording of This Town's Disaster, Brimblecom was undeterred. He added his parts in just two days. Eventually his left leg was amputated from the knee down, but he beat the disease and plays with a computer-chip-enhanced prosthetic. Blackpool Lights talks about the passion, so you'd best get hip to it.
