Over the course of the past decade, the rock duo has had more success than the power trio. And yet we know from history that the power trio (Cream, Rush) is where it's at. The Cleveland-based power trio Blackstone generates plenty of noise on its debut. The album's a showcase for singer-guitarist Jerry "JRoc" Franklin, a guy who cites old school guitar heroes such as Jimi Hendrix as influences. The Kentucky native grew up playing a variety of instruments before settling upon guitar. And he can really play. The solo in the middle of "Clock on the Wall" is simply ferocious, and his tempered playing in "Misery" gives the songs its epic feel. Franklin's woozy vocals can be off-putting at times but the solid songwriting and phenomenal guitar work here make these guys a band to watch.
