Reaped in Half (Tee Pee)

If Boulder's last disc, the poseur-pounding Ravage and Savage, was a call to arms for true metalheads to get back into their leather, the band's latest is an invitation for ladies to get out of theirs. There's still plenty of raw rock kicks: gas-guzzling monster-truck riffs, gnarly bass lines, and leads that drip magma. But with frontman Jaime Walters alternating his pained, glass-gargling scream with clean vocals that make him sound kinda like a less stupefied Ozzy, as well as a pair of underage-love anthems, Reaped in Half could very well get vans a-rockin', in addition to longhairs.

The tone is set from the get-go with "Krank It Up," on which Walters bellows, "Everybody are you ready to bleed? Everybody are you ready to seed, tonight?" The guitars are just as salacious, all squealing bad-boy boogie. The horny-old-man anthem "Arrest Me" rides a Scorpions riff while Walters ogles young girls, Jerry Lee Lewis-style: "Got no hips, oh, but what lips." Even chugging gut-busters like "Yellow Fever" are filled with libidinous metal sentiment: "Hair's so long and black, runnin' down the length of your back/Teeth are fully messed, but they are the ones that are the best."

Of course, there's also plenty of devolved stompers, sure to leave necks sore for a week. The monstrous "Ripped in Half" is Thin Lizzy dipped in tar, album highlight "Ripe and Innocent" is the soundtrack to struttin' through Parma with a big-ass comb sticking out of your back pocket, and the hot-under-the-collar Kiss worship of "Back for the Show" is a melodic meat grinder. It's all pointedly silly, sexy fun, as these dudes take their tongues out of their cheeks just long enough to stick them down your girlfriend's throat.
