With DJ Lawrence Daniel Caswell and Chauncey Peppertooth & the Aphrodesiatics. Wednesday, September 7, at the Grog Shop.

In the not-so-distant future, when every dusty old soul LP, however obscure, has been mined for every last wah-wah lick and snippet of funky drumming, Breakestra will -- hopefully -- still be around to combat the sample shortage. A Los Angeles-based band intent on recreating vintage-sounding jams from the '60s and '70s, Breakestra is the aural equivalent of alternative energy research: Its members are creating new fuel for future funkateers.

The group is led by multi-instrumentalist Miles Tackett, who -- as the son of Little Feat guitarist Fred Tackett -- carries an impressive pedigree in body-movin'. And the material Tackett and company come up with, echoing classic sample sources like the JBs and the Meters, has reportedly been good enough to fool the likes of Roots drummer ?uestlove, who knows a thing or three about the funk. This October will see the release of a full-length collection of Breakestra breaks, Hit the Floor, enabling DJs and crate-diggers to mine some greasy new jams without even getting their hands dirty.
