Bridgestone Championship Golf

When: Wed., Aug. 3 2011
The world's best golfers descend on Firestone Country Club today through August 7 for the World Golf Championships' Bridgestone Invitational. Today's schedule features a practice round for the pros on Firestone's South Course. The real competition begins tomorrow and winds up on Sunday with a 6 p.m. closing ceremony. The field wasn't officially confirmed as we went to press, but expect players like Ireland's Rory McIlroy, PGA vet Harrison Frazar, and defending champ Hunter Mahan to be on hand. Besides the golf, the Bridgestone Invitational raises thousands of dollars for local nonprofits including the Cleveland Foodbank and Akron Children's Hospital. Tickets for today are $20 in advance or $25 at the gate. Youth under 18 and members of the military and their families are free. Find out more at worldgolfchampionships.com or by calling 877-942-4849. Firestone Country Club is at 452 East Warner Rd. in Akron. — Cicora
