Here at Scene, we relish a good bluegrass band that knows how to utilize percussion. Cabinet is one of those bands, and we’re always happy to see how often they grace Northeast Ohio with their presence. On their last album, 2015’s Celebration, the band takes the theme of opening cut “Old Time Songs” to heart; this is music that harkens back to simpler times, often eschewing the “newgrass” label that so often sticks to bluegrass bands these days. Now, that’s not to say that these guys can’t get down: Cabinet is known for high-energy live shows and a dose now and then of hearty improvisation. Check out the two-volume This Is Cabinet set for a taste of how their live show blossoms in every sonic direction. (We recommend “Salt Creek” and “Mr. Spaceman” off each of the two discs, respectively.) (Eric Sandy)
