One of the most acclaimed films of 2016 just became one of the 15 movies short-listed for the 2017 Oscar for Best Documentary Feature! Cinematographer Kirsten Johnson (Citizenfour, The Oath, The Invisible War, This Film Is Not Yet Rated) sits in the director’s chair for Cameraperson, a documentary movie that snippets of footage shot in Bosnia, Africa, the Middle East, and other international hotspots from the past 25 years. Johnson explores several issues, namely, “the relationship between image makers and their subjects; the tension between objectivity and intervention; and the tricky transformation of unfiltered reality into crafted narrative.” The movie makes its Cleveland premiere today at 4:15 at the Cleveland Institute of Art Cinematheque. Admission is $10, $7 for Cinematheque members and students. (Niesel)
