Captain Kidd w/Evolution/Pipe Dream/Hit the Ground Running/Bare Walls

When: Fri., Dec. 27, 7 p.m. 2013
Price: $10 ADV, $12 DOS
Relatively new to the scene, Captain Kidd is already making a name for itself. The self-described "alternative dance" group has made a notable showing at some of Cleveland's smaller clubs. The "alternative" aspect of its musical sensibilities appears to lie mostly within clunky genre shifting mid-song. Still in the adolescence of its musical career, the band explores a plethora of musical options. Occasionally dropping a dub-step half-tempo beat in the middle of a regular dance-rock track or going into Spanish influenced jam sessions, the group indulges in an unpredictable bits of composition. Amidst the slightly confused musical direction, the guys do write some catchy songs. Their single "Freaky Love" from an upcoming EP blends The Cure-esque guitars with indie-pop drums and grungy synth basses. Captain Kidd shows the interesting aspects of a band exploring all of what's possible without limiting the music to a single direction too quickly. (Stoops)
