CD Review: Brian Henke

A Child's Garden

(myspace.com/brianhenkeguitar)

Guitarist Henke, who used to rock out before he started making new-age music more than a decade ago, evokes the late Michael Hedges on this unassuming instrumental album. Henke spends a lot of his spare time trudging through the woods, and you can hear nature's inspiration in aptly titled songs like "A Dancing Gnome and the Goddess of the Moon" and "Searching for Rainbows." His intricate fretwork is quite distinctive on "At the Garden Gate," "Angels Among Us," and a pretty cover of "Over the Rainbow." You won't put on A Child's Garden to start a party, but Henke's coffeehouse instrumentals make perfect background music for a candlelit dinner or a quiet night at the corner bar. — Jeff Niesel
